Here are the rules: Don’t take too long to think about it. Fifteen books you’ve read that will always stick with you. They don’t have to be the greatest books you’ve ever read, just the ones that stick with you. First fifteen you can recall in no more than 15 minutes.
- The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath
- She’s Come Undone, Wally Lamb
- The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger
- The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald
- Good in Bed, Jennifer Weiner
- Valley of the Dolls, Jacqueline Susann
- Harriet the Spy, Louise Fitzhugh
- Helter Skelter, Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry
- In Cold Blood, Truman Capote
- The Long Hard Road Out of Hell, Marilyn Manson
- Violet and Claire, Francesca Lia Block
- The Shining, Stephen King
- Paterson, William Carlos Williams
- Straight Up and Dirty, Stephanie Klein
- A Good Man is Hard to Find and Other Stories, Flannery O’Connor
clearly there were two significant literary periods in my life that will forever stick with me: the depressed, awkward, creepy junior high phase (in cold blood, helter skelter, the shining, marilyn manson); and the depressed, awkward, sleeping-with-losers-in-college chick lit phase.
that’s just what sticks with me.
